This is probably one of the coolest air apps i’ve seen for news based information. I made a quick little video so you can see how responsive this app is. The thing I like about this is how easy it is to work, I thing this is very clever on the New York Times part in changing gears on subscriptions. In the video you’ll see areas of the news that are locked unless you subscribe to the NY Times, I can fore see more print based companies pushing for desktop app coming in the near future. Personally I think it’s great, I think it’s steps closer to doing away with paper and saving more trees, as well as delivering content in a format that can be access anywhere. Thumbs up to the New York Times for helping to take the first steps into innovation.

My attempt to put my site on an iPhone:
So the idea here is this is going to be a step by step learning process of how I’m going to build my site to conform to an iPhone. This is going to be my first real attempt so I’m going to be doing it in stages and I’m sure I’m bound to make mistakes but hey that’s what learning is all about…. right?

So the first step was that I found a great template from www.teehanlax.com follow the link to the psd templates they provide, it’s a really great of those guys to share this with everyone and they did a great job prepping the PSD file to make it easy to use.

Here is a screen shot of how I set the Directory on my site to handle the iPhone version, so when a user calls my site on their iPhone they will be redirected here, and shown this verison.

Code for the home page on iPhone

Here is the code I use to create the pages, you can see that it’s just like creating a normal web page. The only difference is making sure that you use the Javascript (just below) in the header ( On the root/ your normal index/home page to tell the iPhone to redirect these page).

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

Javascript to detect the iPhone, iPod, iTouch

This is the javascript I use on the main index page to redirect to the iphone directory. I put the javascript into a folder called ‘js’ but you don’t have to.

if((navigator.userAgent.match(/iPhone/i)) || (navigator.userAgent.match(/iPod/i))) {
location.href='http://chrissandersdesign.com/wp-content/themes/csdesign/iphone/';
}

CSS I’m using to handle styling the site

You can see that I’m using css in an external style sheet. You don’t have , remember the really key thing here is first getting you site to redirect to the iphone directory or fold that you setup. after that building the site is just like any other.
